Canadian Budget Supports Provincial Efforts to Establish a National Network of Electric Vehicle Chargers

SAN FRANCISCO, March 22, 2016 – Greenlots applauds Finance Minister Morneau’s budget proposal to encourage Canadian businesses to make significant investments in electric vehicle ‘fast’ charging infrastructure – namely that most similar to the traditional gas station model. Additionally, Canada proposes to facilitate significant investments in energy storage technologies.

These are critical components of a national climate change strategy and Canada’s move towards a clean energy economy.

British Columbia, Ontario and Quebec have already laid the groundwork for provincial transportation electrification Strategies. Today Prime Minister Trudeau made this strategy national in scope.

DC fast charging is growing rapidly, with networks in British Columbia, Quebec, and soon to be launched in Ontario under Premier Wynne’s recently announced plan. With today’s budget proposals this gives rise to the very real possibility of a near-term trans-Canadian charging infrastructure network.

“Canada is moving quickly and comprehensively to accelerate transportation electrification and a clean energy economy” said Greenlots CEO Brett Hauser. “This budget package will drastically change the investment environment and spur electric vehicle charging infrastructure and energy storage. Combined with cleaner generation, these technologies will allow Canadians to significantly reduce emissions and public health effects associated with the transportation sector, ” added Mr. Hauser.

Greenlots is committed to open standards and open driver access for EV charging infrastructure utilizing the emerging OCPP global standard. Greenlots has been installing and operating charging infrastructure in Canada since 2012.
